Be sure and visit the northern shore of Great Exuma -Barraterre, where the water isn’t like anything you’ve seen before. It shimmers from sapphire to turquoise, displaying every shade of blue and green in between. Take a boat tour to enjoy front-seat viewing of this wonderful sight.
Don’t miss Stocking Island and its spectacular views from high bluffs and enjoy the sandy beaches dotted all along the shore. Be sure and stop by the famous Chat & Chill beach bar – everyone does!
You’ll love the Starfish Reserve, which, as you can guess, is inhabited by numerous starfish. You will be amazed not only at their vast numbers, but by the large sizes to which they can grow.
Looking for some Bahamas diving action? Try conch shell diving! A good area is just a stone’s throw away from the Starfish Reserve. A must-try local dish that you certainly won’t forget is the conch salad, made from raw conch, chopped onions, peppers, orange juice, lime, and local spices. Yum!
At Big Major’s Cay, you can swim with the friendly wild pigs – don’t miss this opportunity!
PLACES YOU CAN VISIT AGAIN AND AGAIN
By boat or by plane, stop by the Little Farmer’s Cay – the very first inhabited cay in the Exumas. Only 40 minutes from Great Exuma, here, you’ll find a small grocery store as well as Ty’s beachfront restaurant, located right in front of the airstrip, offering up the tastiest burgers in all of the cays. Less than 100 people live on the island, which makes it a good place to mingle with local people and soak up the island culture.
Dubbed as the activity hub in the chain, Staniel Cay is another must-include attraction in your itinerary, and also a favorite spot of yachters. It offers the only full-service marina at Exuma Cays, and also has a club restaurant where you can dance after sundown.
Right across the Staniel Yacht Club is the Thunderball Grotto. This is a haven for snorkelers and scuba divers. If you are one of them, don’t miss this treat. It’s not everyday that you get to snorkel inside a spectacular cave and discover such an incredible underwater feast for the eyes.
Of course, you can’t miss the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Parken compassing more than 20 miles of cays and hailed as the first of its kind in the world. It’s a protected preserve that provides some of the best Bahamian diving and snorkeling adventures that you can find.The coral and marine life includes reefs made of stromatoloites, the oldest living creatures on the planet. If you care to get out of the water, there are also plenty of birding sites and hiking trails
