TREAT YOURSELF TO GUIDED TOURS OF THE MANY EXUMA ATTRACTIONS

There is a lot to be said for wandering and exploring the beaches of Exuma alone or with someone special, and walking across sugar-white secluded beaches sprinkled with champagne-pink seashells. However, there is also nothing like taking advantage of expert, insider knowledge and discovering those little known facts.

You will find worthy attractions all across the Exumas, some right around the corner from Grand Isle Resort & Spa, and others further afield.

The old capital of Exuma can seem sleepy at times, but there is more to old George Town than meets the eye. In order to really understand the place and its history, you might want to hire a local tour guide to reveal it to you.

You’ll learn how pirates commandeered George Town Harbor in the 17th century, how plantation owners from the Virginias and North and South Carolina occupied it in the 18th century and how the British and US military used it as a port in World War II.

Not far from Grand Isle Resort & Spa, you’ll find a historic site dedicated to Pompey, the runaway slave who is credited with sparking the abolitionist movement in the Bahamas more than 180 years ago. The site includes a statue, several historical plaques, the ruins of an old jailhouse and a breathtaking lookout point where Pompey and his followers commandeered a ship and sailed off to freedom.

Unless you prefer a self-guided tour, it is always a good idea to seek out a reputable historian or tour guide, and the best place to do that is the concierge desk at Grand Isle.

EXPLORE EXUMA ATTRACTIONS BY TOUR BOAT
Most of Exuma’s attractions are on or near the water. It’s not hard to find a tour operator with a 35-foot boat that can travel in extremely shallow waters as well as deep waters and take you past amazing sites such as tiny Bahamian fishing villages and celebrity homes. A popular and spectacular tour is the one to nearby Stocking Island.

Tour boats, whether large or small, can take you snorkeling in hard-to-reach canyons and caves such as the Thunderball Grotto, or can take you to see the giant iguanas, sharks or Exuma’s famous swimming pigs. They can also take you to hidden beaches and incredible sandbars, both of which can stretch on for miles.

EXPLORE EXUMA ATTRACTIONS BY YACHT
Guided tours on yachts can be day trips or sleepover tours. These tours can be tailored to your desires, whether that be to laze in the sun or the starlight, to snorkel and dive, or to sail past exclusive celebrity-owned mansions and picnic on beaches.

Compared to Nassau, Exuma is an unblemished, tropical wilderness just waiting to be explored. Take advantage of your time there by having the experience of a lifetime.
